Phi Phi Islands – Ao Nang, Thailand

What?

The Phi Phi Islands are comprised of two islands, Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don. Phi Phi Leh is completely free of human inhabitants and Phi Phi Don lack roads – we traveled by feet. Kho Phi Phi Don is heavily populated but the island provides many options for restaurants, bars, hotels and shops.

Where?

The Phi Phi Islands are in the southern part of Thailand and lie around 45km from the mainland coast of Krabi and 48km from the island of Phuket.

How?

To reach Phi Phi Don, you must ride a ferry and it’s accessible from Phuket and Krabi Province. We took a $15 one-way fairy to Phi Phi Don and it took about 2 hours. From there, we booked an overnight camping trip at Maya Bay, which is a part of Phi Phi Leh. We had an unforgettable experience, even through the thunderstorm – the views we had at the crack of dawn made it well worth it. We met some wonderful people that all slept under the same hut and woke up with bats hovering over our heads. Good times.

We also spent a couple of nights at Ao Nang Paradise Resort . The hotel room we stayed in had amazing views of the mountains is a short walk to the beach. We had the best Thai massage on that beach.

Kho Phi Phi Lee is the second largest island of the group and it consists of 2 bays, Maya Bay and Loh Samah. The photo below was taken on Maya Bay and was made popular from the movie The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio. During the day Maya Bay gets packed with tourists; therefore, we highly recommend overnight beach camping instead.

Although we were supposed to sleep on the beach, we ended up sleeping under a hut with everyone else since there was a storm.
