The ancient ruins of Machu Picchu continue to peak the interests of travelers since its modern rediscovery. This 15th century design lies on a ridge of the Andes Mountains, 2,430 m above sea-level, cleverly tucked away by the Incans. A citadel, theorized to function either as a sacred religious center or a royal estate, was initially built for the Incan leaders; however, by the 16th century Machu Picchu, was left abandoned when the Spanish invaders wiped out their civilization.
Machu Picchu is located in the Cuzco region of Peru.
Machu Picchu is a train ride away from Cuzco – however, we backpacked the Inca Trail for 4 days to get to Machu Picchu, and then took a bus ride down to Machu Picchu city – it was well worth the effort. Note that the bus ride down to Machu Picchu city was an adventure in and of itself.
Machu Picchu is well known for one of the greatest architectural achievements in the world. The building structures are finely crafted, which the Inca’s have mastered cutting stones to fit together without mortar.
Machu Picchu Pueblo, also known as Aguas Calientes, continues to live beneath the ruins along the Willkanuta River. This beautiful town is enclosed by stone cliffs, rushing rivers and mystic forests that soar above the clouds. This modest town developed into a great place for the modern tourist to wind down. After a long hike, this nearby hotspot offers many restaurants, bars, massage parlors, a hot spring and hotels, for those who want to stay the night in town.
