What?
Cusco is a fascinating city that was once the capitol of the Inca Empire. The city has a well preserved colonial architecture and evidence of a rich and complex history. It is well worth it to spend a couple of days in Cusco if taking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, as there other ruins to be seen, and more importantly, to become acclimated to the altitude before the trek.
Where?
Cusco is located in the valley of Huatanay river in south eastern of Peru, in the jurisdiction of the Cusco region.
How?
We booked at the Hotel Royal Inka I for two nights before we started the Inca Trail, and an additional night when coming back from the Inca Trail since we wanted to store our extra luggage at the hotel. The hotel is 3 miles from Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport and is situated in a perfect location, walking distance to many restaurants and architectural sites. We took the Sacred Valley tour with Peru Treks and Aventure and had a wonderful time.
